PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Old Abattoir (il-Biccerija L-Antika) is one of Valletta’s earliest buildings dating back to early 17th Century.  During the 18th Century the building was changed to be used as residents and soldier’s barracks and following that light industries were introduced such as cotton spinning and bakeries.  The bakers’ ovens were still in use until the late 1980’s, in fact the ovens are still evident in the building. After all of this, the building stood still in an advanced state of disrepair. In late 2017, the first stage of renovations and reconstruction started. The revamping project its near end and this year it will open its doors to host the Valletta Design Cluster facilities.
